CROOKSVILLE PANTRY BAK-IN WARE TEAPOT LID TAVERN SILHOUETTE 1930s 7.5” 64 OUNCES
This Silhouette pattern teapot, made by the Crooksville China Co., is part of a semi-porcelain dinnerware set. Old country-style decorations dominated their designs. The Pantry-Bak-In cookware line featured teapots, baking dishes, bean pots, bowls, cookie jars and more. A variety of decals were used on the pieces. Overall, this piece is in excellent condition for being 90 years old. Here are the flaws I see and feel, each small—a little scratch on edge of handle; crazing on very top part of handle, minor surface scratches about an inch out from one of the big side designs toward handle; some normal wear along top edge of rim under lid; and a few tiny flecks of black paint rubbed off of black trimmed rim around lid. Teapot is 7.5 inches tall, has biggest round diameter of 6.5 inches, is 9 inches wide from edge of spout to tip of handle. Holds 64 ounces liquid. The Silhouette design pattern depicts a begging dog and 2 men dining in a tavern. This exact piece sells for $200 on a China replacement piece site.
Crooksville is a village surrounded by rich natural deposits of clay in Perry County, Ohio along Moxahala Creek. It was the home of Hull pottery, one of the best known Ohio potteries. Nicknames: "The Clay City of Perry County,” & “Potteryland USA.” As the town grew from the 1870s with a railroad station, post office and lumber mill, farms cropped up, most of which had a small kiln to make functional pottery. Because these kilns and the clay for making pottery were usually kept in small, unheated buildings, production could only happen from spring through fall, which spurred the nickname “bluebird potteries.” They fired up in spring when bluebirds returned from winter migration and ended when the birds headed south again.
